The Fluoride Controversy

Chances are you are not even aware of the controversy...

On this page you'll find information, articles and links to research about a controversial subject that has spread all the way to the U.S. Congress. Silicofluorides, a waste product made during the production of phosphate fertilizers, have been dumped into many public water supplies continuously for more than 40 years.

This has led to disturbing mass medication, without any informed consent or labeling for the consumer, without any dosage control or concern for the health, or age, of the person consuming it. Today, the fluoride once added to the water in a few communities, has spread to un-fluoridated communities and into the manufactured food and beverages we consume.

Even though fluoride has been positively linked to dental fluorosis (which causes more dental damage and expense now than cavities), brittle bones, inhibited melatonin production (which can trigger the early onset of sexual maturation) and neurological impairment, our children are being regularly overdosed above the recommended "safe" doses that start at NONE for infants under six months.

The Institute for Biological Dentistry is proud to present this information so you can explore this subject and make your own informed decisions.

Quick Facts About Fluoride and Cavities:

Even supporters of fluoride are reducing their
claims about its cavity fighting abilities.

  • In 1988, the American Dental Association claimed a 40-60% reduction of cavities from the use of fluoride; they now claim 18-25%: and other supporters claim only 12%.

  • In the largest study ever done, records of 39,000 US school children between the ages of 5 and 17, from 84 areas of the country with fluoridated water (1/3rd), partially fluoridated water (1/3rd) or un-fluoridated water (1/3rd) showed no statistically significant difference in the rate of tooth decay in these communities.

Quick Facts About Water Fluoridation:

  • Sodium fluoride and silicofluorides are added to 62% of U.S. and 40% of Canadian public water supplies.

  • A World Health Organization survey, reports a reduction in the rates of dental decay in western Europe equal to or greater than in the U.S., even though 98% of the western European water supply is un-fluoridated.

  • Water fluoridation mass medicates at higher than prescribed levels for young children [0-4yrs]. The scheduled dose for infants under 6 months is NONE.

  • 66.4% of children living in "optimally fluoridated" communities have at least one tooth that displays visible signs of fluoride overdose (dental fluorosis)

  • The chemicals used in 90% of U.S. water fluoridation programs are industrial-grade hazardous wastes captured in the pollution-control scrubber systems of the phosphate fertilizer industry.

  • Until the early 1940s, fluorides produced as a by-product of aluminum and fertilizer industries were considered so toxic they could only be sold off for use in Rat Poison & Insecticide.

  • Drinking water fluoridation is opposed by both the Pasteur Institute and the Nobel Institute.

Fluoride: Poison or Panacea?

In May of 2001 the U.S. Congress expanded its probe into the health effects of the fluoride that is added to 62% of U.S. public water sources. What is it that congress is concerned about?

The question is, are we merely benefiting from a chemical which the American Dental Association, the National Academy of Sciences and the Environmental Protection Agency say is "safe and effective" for fighting tooth decay, or are we mass-medicating ourselves and our children with varying doses of a toxic chemical - which was never meant to be ingested - through our fluoridated public water. New science is changing views around the world.....

The Fluoridation Fiasco

Written by Gary Null, Ph.D.
Copyright© Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients 1998 All Rights Reserved

There's nothing like a glass of cool, clear water to quench one's thirst. But the next time you or your child reaches for one, you might want to question whether that water is in fact, too toxic to drink. If your water is fluoridated, the answer may well be yes.

For decades, we have been told a lie, a lie that has led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans and the weakening of the immune systems of tens of millions more. This lie is called fluoridation. A process we were led to believe was a safe and effective method of protecting teeth from decay is in fact a fraud. In recent years it's been shown that fluoridation is neither essential for good health nor protective of teeth. What it does is poison the body. We should all, at this point, be asking how and why public health policy and the American media continue to live with and perpetuate this scientific sham.

Former Fan of Fluoridation Now Warns of its Perils

Written by Barry Forbes of The Tribune, Mesa, AZ
Sunday, December 5, 1999 "Reproduced With Permission"

"Why'd you do it, Doc? Why'd you toss the fluoride folks overboard?"

I had just tracked down Dr. Hardy Limeback, B.Sc., Ph.D. in Biochemistry, D.D.S., head of the Department of Preventive Dentistry for the University of Toronto, and president of the Canadian Association for Dental Research. (Whew.) Dr. Limeback is Canada's leading fluoride authority and, until recently, the country's primary promoter of the controversial additive.

In a surprising newsmaker interview this past April, Dr. Limeback announced a dramatic change of heart. "Children under three should never use fluoridated toothpaste," he counseled. "Or drink fluoridated water. And baby formula must never be made up using Toronto tap water. Never." Why, I wondered?

Fluoride in Bottled Water?

Although recent studies have questioned whether manufacturers of bottled water really are producing pure water, you can be comfortably reassured that chlorine and fluoride have been filtered out. But now on the scene is one large corporate conglomerate marketing bottled water with fluoride added.

Of course we want to eliminate all the impurities of public water, therefore filtered water has become very popular. Who would have thought that people would pay one or two dollars for a bottle of water. So why add a substance as toxic as fluoride back into water? Obviously many Americans have been convinced by mass marketing that infants, adolescents and even adults need fluoride to protect their teeth. Nothing is further from the truth. Opponents have concluded that fluoride does not prevent cavities and may even be dangerous to your health.

How Much Fluoride is in a School Lunch?

How much fluoride would you find in your kids favorite foods if you took them from the cafeteria and sent them to the lab? You'll be shocked to find out how much fluoride was lurking in the foods in Mountain View, California, a community that has never been fluoridated.

Environmental Protection Agency Scientists Oppose Fluoride

The following documents why our union, formerly National Federation of Federal Employees Local 2050 and since April 1998 Chapter 280 of the National Treasury Employees Union, took the stand it did opposing fluoridation of drinking water supplies. Our union is comprised of and represents the approximately 1500 scientists, lawyers, engineers and other professional employees at EPA Headquarters here in Washington, D.C.

The union first became interested in this issue rather by accident. Like most Americans, including many physicians and dentists, most of our members had thought that fluoride's only effects were beneficial - reductions in tooth decay, etc. We too believed assurances of safety and effectiveness of water fluoridation.

Canada Questions Value of Water Fluoridation

Fluoridation probably does more harm than good, says the Canadian government 2001 report "Benefits and Risks of Water Fluoridation". The best solution is to "cease fluoridation", the author suggests.

"Current studies support the view that dental fluorosis has increased in both fluoridated and non fluoridated communities (at)... rates of 20-75% in the former and 12-45% in the later." The report also states "No Canadian studies provide evidence that water fluoridation is effective in reducing (tooth) decay in contemporary child populations."

Tooth Decay Is Back - Fluoride's No Help

NEW YORK, May 2, 2001 /PRNewswire/

"Tooth decay is back -- it's worse than ever -- it's coming to a tooth near you," said a dentist to a National Institutes of Health (NIH) panel convened to evaluate tooth decay research, March 2001. Most tooth decay research is poorly done, the panel concluded.

Despite water fluoridation, a glut of fluoridated products and skyrocketing children's fluoride overdose symptoms (dental fluorosis) in fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities, tooth decay is still a major problem.

"While fluoride is proclaimed a significant cavity reducer, there is little, if any, science to support that," says lawyer Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation. "Furthermore, there's no evidence that lack of fluoride puts children at high risk for cavities," he says.
